OVERVIEW: The AT-2M is a Soviet lightweight, air- and ship-launched acoustic torpedo believed to have entered service around 1975. It was developed as a further evolution of the AT-1 series for improved performance against submarines in both deep and shallow waters.

DETAILS: The AT-2M (Aviasionnaya Torpeda Model 2 Modernizirovannaya) was designed to replace earlier AT-1 and AT-1M torpedoes. It retained the 450 mm diameter and electric propulsion system powered by silver-zinc batteries but introduced a dual-mode active/passive acoustic seeker. The seeker was optimized for detecting quieter, deeper-diving diesel-electric submarines. It featured improved resistance to countermeasures and enhanced search patterns. The AT-2M could be deployed from fixed-wing maritime aircraft, helicopters, and compatible surface ship launchers.

TYPE: Lightweight acoustic-homing torpedo

FUNCTION: After launch, the AT-2M enters the water and activates its dual-mode acoustic seeker to detect submerged threats. It homes in using either passive listening or active sonar reflection and detonates on contact with the target.
